Decoding Christianity
Christianity Decoded unlocks the mysteries of Christian art and architecture, revealing the meaning behind its symbols and iconography, its myths and its magic.
So you think you know Christianity? You know its symbols, its shapes, its art and its rituals – but do you know what lies beneath them? How did they come into being, what do they represent, and why? Why did medieval art put such an emphasis on the sufferings of Christ – the gory and the glory? Why are churches shaped the way they are, and what hidden meanings do they contain? Is the cross really an original symbol of Christianity? Why do so many people believe in angels?
Each program provides a compelling new insight into the evolution of ‘The Church’, its symbols and its iconography, its myths and its magic. Adopting a thematic, investigative and quirky approach we bring the audience on a journey of discovery, decoding the mysteries of the church and its symbolism.
The series takes us behind the scenes, showing how individual cultures expressed Christian beliefs through the artistic and architectural ‘languages’ of their own civilizations, and how the religious and secular worlds have sometimes become blurred as Christian religious symbols, images, shrines and places of worship were used for Machiavellian purposes by church and state.
